In years past, the Coast Bible Conference was offered as a, "Vacation with a purpose." We started on Sunday evening and held sessions and activities all week long. Many people traveled from out-of-town and stayed the entire week. We met and stayed at beautiful, self-contained facilities right across the street from the Mississippi beach in Biloxi. The CBC was the ONLY conference of its type in the country! On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina changed everything. The church/conference facilities were destroyed, hotel prices skyrocketed, and many of the local recreation and entertainment offerings disappeared. By God's Grace, the conference continued during the next two years ('06 and '07), but attendance was down. People just didn't seem able or willing to afford the week of hotels and dining out. It was also a substantial "time-away-from-work" commitment for working families. Through your donations, the conference was also providing for housing and food expenses for our speakers and staff for the entire week. It became clear that we needed to make some changes. Facing these new realities, the Board determined we needed to streamline our conference beginning in 2008. We have settled on a new format. This year, Dr. Toussaint agreed to provide a special session on Wednesday evening, but the bulk of the conference sessions will start on Thursday at noon. This will allow out-of-town attendees to travel to the area on Thursday morning and depart Saturday afternoon. Out-of-town staff and visitors will only require 2 overnights. In the past, we asked speakers to provide 10 sessions and limit each session to 45 minutes. In the new format, speakers will have 7 session and up to 55 minutes each--only a slight decrease in overall teaching time. There are still plenty of breaks and fellowship time built into the new schedule. And most importantly, the focus is still on sound Biblical teaching from the best Bible expositors available today. |

Dr. Toussaint is a returning conference favorite. If you review the Past Speakers page, you'll discover that he first spoke at the CBC in 1967! A pastor-teacher committed to expository preaching, Dr. Toussaint enjoys both roles. He has taught at Dallas Seminary since 1960 and pastored for more than 20 years. An editor, author, teacher, and conference speaker, he has taught in Christian schools in the Middle East, Australia, and the Far East and has ministered in the pulpit literally around the world. More about Dr. Toussaint (excerpts from his DTS profile): Dr. Toussaint grew up in a small town in Minnesota, which is the focal point of one of his well-known sayings: “I was reared in Hinckley, Minnesota, where the men are men, pansies are flowers, and the women are slightly above average.” He says this is a take-off from a quote by Garrison Keiler about his hometown, Lake Wobegon. He refers to his home church in Hinckley, MN as an “evangelical, alter-calling, Bible-believing, pre-millennial Presbyterian church.” While he heard the message of the gospel since his early childhood, it was at a Bible camp when he was 9-years old that he first trusted Christ. And by the age of 12, he was committed to full-time Christian ministry. (His church put 25 people into full-time ministry in 30 years.)He waffled about this decision until he was a senior in high school, when God deeply convicted him about his calling. He shared this decision with his father, who owned a hardware business in Hinckley and was hoping that Dr. Toussaint would take over the business someday. “When I told him, I know he was disappointed, but he didn't say one word about it.” Dr. Toussaint received his bachelor's degree from Augsburg College and his Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Seminary. After that, he taught Greek, Bible, and theology for 3 years at Northwestern College in Minneapolis. He also taught on the radio 5 days a week, at Bible conferences, and at some of the larger churches in Minneapolis. “That was a great experience. The Lord opened so many doors there.” He said his greatest passion in ministry is the exposition of the Scriptures in the pulpit and the classroom. <<TOP>> |
Dr. Constable will be speaking at the conference for the first time. Dr. Constable is the founder of Dallas Seminary's Field Education department (1970) and the Center for Biblical Studies (1973), both of which he directed for many years before assuming other responsibilities. Today Dr. Constable maintains an active academic, pulpit supply, and conference-speaking ministry around the world. He has ministered in nearly three dozen countries and written commentaries on every book of the Bible. Dr. Constable also founded a church, pastored it for 12 years, and has served as one of its elders for over 30 years. More about Dr. Constable (excerpts from his DTS profile): Dr. Constable was born in the Chicago area, and his father worked at the Moody Bible Institute. Many of his father's coworkers there were DTS graduates, and he was encouraged to attend seminary here. He attended Wheaton College and received degrees there in Bible and philosophy before he and Mary made the move to Dallas for his Th.M. in 1962. Throughout his seminary career, the Constables expected that they would end up overseas someday, and even after he graduated, they continued to pursue possibilities in Brazil and the Philippines. He enrolled in the Ph.D. program at DTS and was asked to assist Dr. Campbell, who was then academic dean. Soon after, Dr. Constable began teaching in the Pastoral Ministries department. He was instrumental in the development of the Field Education department and the Center for Biblical Studies (CBS). Because of his passion for teaching the Bible inside and outside the classroom, Dr. Constable has taught rotational Bible courses at Word of Life Bible Institute in Hungary and has done some speaking for mission organizations. “I try to encourage missionaries from the Scriptures … to persevere and not lose sight of what they are accomplishing. They are not ineffective or forgotten, and the results of their work are lasting.” He has also written several books and made all of his extensive study notes available for free on the internet. He began this set of notes in 1984 for his students and has been adding to and modifying it ever since, including things that he expects to be helpful. His vast scholarship provides an expositional study of every book of the Bible, some of which have been published and translated for use around the world.
