Historical Narrative

An Oasis of Biblical Truth Since 1941! For over 68 years, the goal of the conference has been to provide residents and visitors on the Mississippi Gulf Coast with the best in-depth Bible instruction available in a conference format. In those 68+ years, there have more than 75 speakers comprised of Seminary and Bible College Professors, Christian Authors, Theologians, Pastors, and Missions and Ministry Leaders. Countless numbers of attendees, of all ages, have been blessed by the opportunities for Biblical instruction, edification, fellowship, and worship provided at the CBC.

History of the Conference. The conference began as Fellowship Bible Conference at the Seashore Methodist Camp Grounds in 1941. In 1946, the name was changed to the Gulf Coast Bible Conference. In 1949, the location was moved to Camp Kittiwake and it was called Gulf Bible Conference. In 1957, it moved to Gulf Park College campus and remained there until 1964, when it returned to the Methodist camp where it began 23 years earlier. There were no conferences held for three years during the height of the Viet Nam conflict (1968-1970). In 1971, the conference was revived as the Coast Bible Conference and returned to the Methodist Assembly Camp Grounds. It was also held at the First Presbyterian Church in Biloxi during the mid-70s. By 1978, the conference was back at the Leggett Memorial Church and Seashore Camp Grounds. In 1983, the conference moved to the University of Southern Mississippi-Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach. It remained there for 11 years until it returned to the Leggett Memorial Methodist Assembly Camp Grounds in Biloxi in 1994. For the next 11 years, the camp grounds hosted the conference as families from around the country came to the MS Gulf Coast to enjoy a week-long "Vacation with a Purpose." Then, on August 29, 2005, the Methodist facilities, along with much of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Since 2006, The Coast Bible Conference has been held at New Hope Baptist Church in Gulfport. The conference has been shortened to an intense three-day, Thursday-afternoon-thru-Saturday-morning format.

The CBC board members, with the support of your prayers and God's help, strive to continue to offer a unique opportunity of spiritual growth centered around the teaching of God's Word on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Our Mission Statement: To facilitate sound Biblical teaching.

Our Key Bible Verse: Now the Bereans received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. (Acts 17:11)

We Believe
  • We believe the Bible (Old and New Testaments) to be the only inspired, infallible, authoritative Word of God.
  • We believe there is one God, eternally existent in three persons; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of His Father, and in His personal return in power and glory.
  • We believe salvation is the gift of God brought to Man by Grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed on Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins.
  • We believe the Church, which is the body and espoused bride of Christ, is a spiritual organism made up of all born-again persons of this present age.
  • We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling, the Christian is enabled to live a Godly life.
  • We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.

Our Logo

For many years, the Coast Bible Conference held its meetings at the University of Southern Mississippi in Long Beach, MS. Those in attendance often relaxed outside under a special tree on campus called the Friendship Oak. Because of the many fond memories of conversation and fellowship spent beneath it, the conference logo became an oak tree holding a Bible.

CBC Theme Song

Music note in hands

Verse
God has drawn us here to study His Holy Word.
Its pages burn with truth divine, our hearts aflame are stirred.
Our fellowship is from the Father, Spirit, and Son;
To share the Scripture together, will bind our spirits as one.

Chorus
At the Coast Bible Conference, to come in one accord,
At the Coast Bible Conference, to praise and worship our Lord,
At the Coast Bible Conference, we lift our banner unfurled.
To delight in His Word - hide it deep in our hearts
Then to share it with the world.

Lyrics and Melody: Phil White

Watermelon Seed-Spitting Tradition
In years past (until 2009), the conference invited its speakers to participate in a watermelon seed-spitting contest after a watermelon fellowship. Each participant was given two attempts, and his distance was determined by where the seed stopped. The best distances are recorded as seen below...
According to the
US Watermelon Seed-Spitting and Speed-Eating Championship,
held annually on the second weekend in September in
Pardeeville, Wisconsin, the current record is
39 feet for women and 61 feet, 3 inches for men.
